Reid, Milton

Milton Rutherford Reid (April 29, 1917 – 1987?) was a huge, stocky, muscular, bald headed English actor and professional wrestler. He was born in India, the son of a Scottish-born Customs and Excise inspector and an Indian or a Mongolian woman.

Milton Reid as Dr No’s guard.

He wrestled in England under the name of The Mighty Chang.

As an actor, Reid was known for playing thugs, henchmen and brutes, typified by his role as Yen in the 1959 film Ferry to Hong Kong that starred Curt Jurgens and Orson Welles. Reid appeared in three James Bond films: Casino Royale in which he had a bit part as a guard; as Dr No’s guard in Dr No; and as Sandor, Roger Moore’s opponent in a roof top fight in The Spy Who Loved Me.

Reid was attempting to secure the role of Oddjob in Goldfinger and challenged Harold Sakata to a wrestling match, the outcome would decide who would get the role. As Reid had already appeared in Dr No, the producers decided to go with Sakata, and the wrestling match did not take place.

Reid appeared in 53 films and television programmes from 1953 to 1979. He also appeared in some X rated films but not as a sexual participant. He travelled back to India where his mother and sister stayed, and he supposedly died of a heart attack in 1982, but his son was still receiving written correspondence from him in 1986. His death is something of a mystery because of the conflicting dates of death and also as he died in obscurity in India.
