Jonathan Cape

Jonathan Cape was a British publisher founded in 1919 as Jonathan Page and Company; the name was changed in 1921, and it took over the back list of AC Fifield. From that point on it was a major force in British publishing, notably of books by TE Lawrence, Arthur Ransome and Ian Fleming. A defensive merger with Chatto and Windus was carried out in 1969; later Bodley Head and Virago Press were added to the group, before becoming an imprint of Random House in 1987.
